History of Girl Scout Founder’s Day

Almost everyone knows about Girls Scout cookies! But this day is about raising awareness for the organization that is behind the cookies, and the founder of it all.

Celebrated on the birthday of the American founder of the Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scout Founder’s Day offers an opportunity to look back at the roots of this important organization.

Juliette Gordon Low was born on October 31, 1860 and was affectionately known by the nickname “Daisy”. Inspired by Lord Baden-Powell who founded Boy Scouts, Low originally joined the movement of Girl Guides in England in 1911. Upon returning to the US in 1912, Low started Girl Guides in Savannah, Georgia, USA. Three years later, the name was changed to Girl Scouts and Low remained active in the movement until her death in 1927.

Over the years, it has become a tradition for Girl Scouts and Girl Scout troops to celebrate Founder’s Day in honor and commemoration of Juliette Gordon Low each year. Now Girl Scout Founder’s Day is here to get people more connected with this important organization and the woman who started it all.

  • Girl Scouts aim to bring their dreams to live, and they work together to build a better world. They are committed to finding their voices to make the world a better place.

  • Girl Scouts rise to meet new challenges, particularly seeking to close the gender gap and empowering girls who will become women leaders.

  • Girl Scouts enjoy traditions that have been practiced by people in the organization for more than 100 years.

  • Even though they are united by a strong history, Girl Scouts are also all about looking forward to the future.
