“I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.” — Carl Jung
Metta Yoga Therapy is a holistic healing art. It is the art of tapping the resources deep within you to heal yourself. Think of it as “facilitated awareness”, “embodied mindfulness”, or “yoga centered talk therapy.”
The aim of Metta Yoga Therapy is to facilitate healing in a holistic manner, recognizing that not only your physical condition but also your emotional states and behavioral patterns are intimately connected and contribute to your well-being. Through a combination of classical yoga postures, elements of mind-body psychology, and mindfulness practice (insight meditation) techniques, Metta Yoga Therapy invites presence and encourages a deeper connection with the Self.
Metta Yoga Therapy provides a safe and non-judgmental space for self-exploration and reflection, from the level of the body. No experience of yoga is required nor do you need to be flexible. It is recommended that you are comfortable with being respectfully touched while clothed.
Each session is tailored to your individual needs. It is your experience in the present moment that will guide the pace and flow of the session
Metta Yoga Therapy is not a substitute for psychotherapy or any other type of counseling. You will be encouraged to witness yourself and provide answers to your own questions. My role is to listen unconditionally and to be present in a non-judgmental way to whatever shows up in the session. Psychotherapy involves analysis of feelings and behaviors, but I trust that your insight and transformation will arise when you use your body as a vehicle to enhance the psyche and nourish the spirit. It is not within my scope of practice to diagnose you or recommend medication.
Metta Yoga Therapy is not a yoga class although you will be placed into supported yoga postures while you remain passive. You will be encouraged to simply witness what arises in each moment. There is no agenda other than being present to what is. When you listen to your body’s wisdom, it will reveal its story to you. By listening to what is revealed you will learn how to heal yourself from within and how to make conscious, positive choices in your life – YOU ARE YOUR OWN TEACHER because the session is totally client-centered.
A typical 90 minute session begins with a guided centering and body scan, taking time to settle in by connecting with your breath, body, emotions, mind, and spirit.
Assisted yoga postures are then used to bring awareness and attention into the body and into the present moment. Non-directive dialogue creates the opportunity to share and explore patterns of thought, emotion, and life situations. We only focus on “what’s happening now.”
The session ends with an integration process and ultimately an action step, a tangible way to bring the insights gained during the session into your daily life.
